Galactosemia is a disorder in which the galactose metabolism is impaired and requires a lifetime restriction of galactose intake. Since galactose is a natural component of the milk sugar lactose, dairy products should be avoided.

Lactose intolerance can be caused by a deficiency in the enzyme lactase, which is involved in breaking down lactose. Lactase deficiency leads to gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhea after eating foods containing lactose (e.g. dairy products). The exchange of lacose for other carbohydrates contributes significantly to the improvement of gastrointestinal complaints and the normalization of digestion.
